iCal 1.5.1

Oct 12, 2003 in Mac

Michael writes about the latest version of iCal. It sounds like he’s looked at it more deeply than I. Having scheduled a few events, though, I feel that 1.5.1 is a definite improvement over the 1.0 release.

First off, I really like the new drawer. One of my complaints about the old inspector is that it could get separated from the calendar window if you move or resize your window or you change your calendar view. Now, the additional information about appointments is always right next to window, exactly where I’m expecting it. However, I’m not trying to view calendars on an iBook screen.

Second, the location field is nice. Honesty, I can’t remember whether or not this field was in 1.0 (I want to say “No,” but I’m not sure since I can’t call up 1.0 for comparison). At the very least, the new drawer interface does a better job of exposing the field. As far as I can tell, though, the iPod calendar interface does not appear to display this information. Too bad.

Third, as Michael points out, iCal no longer fights you when changing times and dates. That particular idiosyncracy was extremely annoying and I’m very happy the behavior was changed.

Why Not?!?

Document type doesn't permit attribute "Porn" with element "<a>"

Well, it should!

For more proof that errors and random chance can be funny in that juvenile sort of way, check out what recently got sent out as a serial number by Ambrosia Software.

Growing Up

Oct 12, 2003 in Humor

Matt Gemmell:

Yes, my dear old cousin has been sneaking away from his wife and child to look at porn, under the guise of looking after his parents’ house in their absence. Rock ‘n roll!

Some friends and I were discussing the difference between growing up and getting older now that we’re out of school. We’re all getting older but in no way have we grown up. The consensus was we’d grow up when we had the first thing. Nice to know some things won’t change, though!

WWDC DVDs

Oct 12, 2003 in Mac

My roommates’ WWDC 2003 DVDs arrived Friday — he attended on a student scholarship, so the DVDs are an additional bonus.

I must say, that black tin sitting on my coffee table looks very inviting right now.

Hire Chris

Chris Turner:

So potential employers, I’m a Mac geek with a decade of experience in computer support, with a little HTML knowledge I’d like to expand on. I need to stay in the Dallas area, and I’m open to contract, contract-to-hire, or, best of all, permanent positions.

If you’re looking for a Mac guy in the Dallas area, give Chris a look. I’ve known and worked with him through ATPM for several years now. He’s both very talented and very cool.

Backlog Cleanout

Oct 12, 2003 in Site

I just finished cleaning up after refereeing 7 soccer games in 2 days (covering tournaments in 2 different towns). Suffice it to say, my legs are a little sore right now.

However, they say timing is everything. Since I’m pretty much couch-bound for the rest of the night, I can finally caught up on my backlog of blogging topics :)

…and, if you’ve got to be couch-bound, what better night to do it than before a Red Sox-Yankees‘ playoff game. May it be better than yesterday’s debacle.

Holy…. the Sox WON!

Mumbling incogerently incoherently right now. New roommate Dave is wonderring if I’ll survive or keel over from the stress/joy.

Never easy with the Sox. Gotta love it though.

Time to kick some Yankees‘ ass… and relearn how to vocalize complete sentences…

Now Mostly Up

Oct 01, 2003 in Site

As you can see, I’m baaaack!

The folks at XrackHosting were able to set me up with a temporary URL for my webspace so I could access my Movable Type installation and re-export my data.

This time, I used Camino and the data file came out looking exactly like the HTML tags were stripped. I know there are problems exporting MT weblogs with IE, but I’m fairly certain I used Safari

In my last post, I mentioned that the guys at XrackHosting had been very helpful, even though most of my issues involved switching providers. Basically, I just outgrew their offerings (the lack of shell accounts was a rather big issue for me) and decided to jump on DreamHost’s birthday special. However, if you’re looking for a Mac OS X web hosting company with excellent customer support, I can’t recommend them enough.

Now, the only thing keeping me from blogging at full speed is that there are only 24 hours in the day. :-) Between work, moving on Sunday, and the Red Sox being in the playoffs, there’s not time for much else!

Still Mostly Down

Oct 01, 2003 in Site

If you’re reading this, then you’re viewing the now DreamHost-ed raoli.com. However, you’re likely also noticing that there isn’t much of anything from the old raoli.com. Turns out something funky happened to my backup file from the old XrackHosting account and it couldn’t be properly imported.

I’m chatting with the folks from Xrack to try and regain access to my MT installation (I’m getting a Forbidden message when I try to access mt.cgi), so hopefully all the content will be back shortly. Otherwise, I’m going to go back and hand-massage the mangled backup file. That will likely be a piecemeal process that will begin in earnest after I move this weekend.

Considering that I’m moving to a competitor, the folks at XrackHosting have been remarkably helpful. I have to give them props for that.

So, the short version is Welcome Back and Please Pardon the Dust :-)

Downtime

Sep 28, 2003 in Site

Got some downtime coming up while I switch hosts. Hopefully I won’t screw this up too badly…
