Relief Ace

Last Thursday, ESPN hosted a chat with Bill James, sabermetrician, author, and senior baseball operations advisor for the Boston Red Sox. In the chat, James briefly discusses his concept of a “Relief Ace” as opposed to either a Closer or “Bullpen-by-Committee.”

After watching Tuesday night’s Red Sox — Yankees, can we officially declare Brandon Lyon the official Relief Ace of the Red Sox? The youngest member of the Red Sox (and younger than me, which is bringing a whole bunch of my issues to the surface, but that’s another story) came into a 10 — 7 ballgame and proceeded to strike out Robin Ventura, Alfonso Soriano, and Derek Jeter to shut the door on the Yankees. Thank you and good night.
