Relief Ace

Last Thursday, ESPN hosted a chat with Bill James, sabermetrician, author, and senior baseball operations advisor for the Boston Red Sox. In the chat, James briefly discusses his concept of a “Relief Ace” as opposed to either a Closer or “Bullpen-by-Committee.”

After watching Tuesday night’s Red SoxYankees, can we officially declare Brandon Lyon the official Relief Ace of the Red Sox? The youngest member of the Red Sox (and younger than me, which is bringing a whole bunch of my issues to the surface, but that’s another story) came into a 10 — 7 ballgame and proceeded to strike out Robin Ventura, Alfonso Soriano, and Derek Jeter to shut the door on the Yankees. Thank you and good night.
